It’s a Chihuahua parents’ worse nightmare! Losing a beloved pet is terrifying and devastating. It can happen to anyone. I’ve had many anxious moments when one of my dogs somehow got out. But there are precautions to prevent and lessen the likelihood of losing a beloved Chihuahua.
Never leave your dog unsupervised. The majority of dogs that become lost were unattended at the time they went missing. Keeping your Chihuahua always in your sight will greatly reduce the risk that he will become lost and will also keep him safe.
Take extra precautions during thunderstorms and fireworks displays. July 4th is Independence Day in the U.S. and the time that the number of dogs that become lost increases dramatically every year. The same goes for New Year’s Eve. If you know your dog is afraid of thunderstorms or loud noises be sure he has a safe place to “ride it out” during these events. Learn to recognize signs of anxiety and try products to provide relief. Thunder Shirts work very well for most Chihuahuas. Also, try natural calming aids.
Provide an escape-proof enclosure. Periodically check fences and the ground that supports them. Be sure that there are no spaces anywhere that your dog could squeeze through. Even if your dog is not a digger, the neighbors behind you may have a dog that digs and could dig a hole large enough for your little Chihuahua to escape into their yard that may not be secure enough for a small dog. A frightened Chi will run if he has a place big enough to escape through. It’s just instinct.
Be sure your dog has on a collar and an ID tag when they go outside — even if it’s just to potty. It is crucial that the information is correct and current. This is a simple precaution that has reunited many lost dogs with their owners.
Microchip your dog. Last, but certainly not least, the best way to prevent your dog from becoming lost forever is to microchip him! It greatly increases the chances that your dog will be identified at your local vet or shelter. I see it happen every day. People bring in dogs to the Veterinarian Hospital where I work part-time that they found on their doorstep or wandering in the street. We scan them and I’ve witnessed many happy reunions! The BEST part of my job!
I hope these tips help keep your dog from becoming lost and keep him safely at home with you where he is loved and cared for.
