To Consider Before You Dress Your Chi in a Costume
According to veterinarians, it is important to be aware of your dog’s response when putting a Halloween costume on your Chihuahua. If he shows any signs of irritation or if he runs from you every time he sees you with a costume, then please don’t stress your Chihuahua by trying to force him to wear one.
If you own A Chihuahua(s) and you plan to put a Halloween or any costume on him — or a coat or sweater — any time during the year, it is really a good idea to train them to wear one while they are young. If you got your dog as an adult, you can still condition them to at least tolerate wearing clothes. But do it slowly and again, never force him to wear a costume.
Guidelines When Buying A Costume
Here are some safety guidelines when choosing a Halloween costume for your Chihuahua:
- Make sure that they are easy to put on and to take off. You should be able to take the costume off easily and quickly in case of an emergency.
- Be sure that he can’t take it off himself, he may choke himself trying to remove it.
- No masks that may obstruct his breathing or his vision in any way. If there is a mask, put it on him only for a quick photo op.
- The costume should not have anything loose that your Chi could bite or scratch off and then swallow. Watch for any choking hazards.
- Never leave your Chihuahua unsupervised while wearing a costume. Where ever you are, at home, a party, or elsewhere, keep your eyes on him at all times.

A few years after our inception, I met a truly unique dog clothing designer named Jennifer Basulto. “Jennifer’s dresses” (inside joke!) were truly a work of art! We quickly came to realize that we had a lot in common; we both love Chihuahuas (we both have 5) and we also have a similar sense of humor, so we became fast friends.
