When I come home in my scrubs from the veterinary hospital where I work part-time, I am immediately surrounded by all three of my dogs. Oh, yes, they are glad to see me, but that’s not why they are so interested at that moment.
Dogs have over 300 million (I’ve read it’s more like 500 million) olfactory receptors compared to our measly 6 million. What my dogs are so interested in is all the dogs, cats, hamsters, and miniature pigs that I have been near that day. I don’t even have to rub against these pets for my dogs to know I was near them. Isn’t that amazing?
The part of a dog’s brain that is used to analyze smells is proportionally 40 times larger than ours. That is why scent games are so beneficial and fun for your Chihuahua! That is why scent games are a great way to mentally exercise your Chihuahua’s brain.
Why Scent Games are Important
No matter how old a dog is he will benefit from brain games. It stimulates them mentally, helps them socialize and makes for a happier and healthier dog. Brain games and scent games are not just for the brain either. Playing games with your dog is a great way to bond with him, and keeping him from getting bored and even provides needed exercise.
Boredom is often the reason behind some bad behaviors, especially destructive ones. If your dog is always chewing on things, destroying throw pillows, furniture, etc. chances are he is just bored. Scent games keep him engaged and it’s fun for you too!
Best Brain Game Ever!
This is the best scent game because it is so easy! Take a towel or piece of cloth to a friend and have them rub it all over their dog or cat. Even better if they can get a drop of urine on it because urine contains strong scents, but rubbing it will do.
Next, without your dog seeing you do it, place the cloth out of sight somewhere in the yard, beneath a tree or behind a tree. Then let your Chihuahua out and watch him find it! Try this scent game with the scent of different animals; hamster, parrot, ferret, or whatever you can find.
It is best to do this outside. A dog will urinate over the scent of another animal in an effort to reclaim territory.
