How to Train Your Chihuahua Series, Part IX, “Down”

It’s time for part 9 of our series on how to train your Chihuahua. Part 9 is How to teach your dog down, and why it’s important.

Why should you teach your dog down?

There are three important reasons that you may want to teach your dog down.

  • To lie in his bed when you have company
  • To lie down when you are eating
  • When in some situations you want him to calm down

Keep in mind that this may be difficult if your dog is older, has arthritis, or other joint issues.

How to teach your dog down.

  • With him facing you hold a treat in front of his nose and slowly lower it to the floor.
  • If you are lucky he will follow the treat with his nose and lie down. It’s very rare for a dog to get the idea the first time, but if he does, give him the treat and lavishly praise him.
  • The goal is for him to lie flat on his belly, front paws in front of him. Do not give him a treat until he is in the full “down” position.
  • If he slouches instead of lying down, slowly slide the treat either closer to him or away from him. It may take time for him to get the idea, but be patient.
  • When he is consistently lying down on cue, gradually delay giving him the treat. Say “wait” and then “good” and give him the treat. Gradually lengthen the “wait”.

Remember not to give him the treat until you give him the “release” command. You can use either “okay” or “good”, but whatever word you decide to use, use that word only. Don’t confuse him by saying okay one time and good the next.

Frequently asked questions:

What if my dog just refuses to do it?

Lying down in front of you is a subservient expression for dogs. If your dog resists, revaluate your position as the “leader” of the pack.

What if my dog will do it in one room but not another?

Consider the type of floor. Short haired dogs will sometimes resist lying on a hard surface. Try a carpeted area.
