Sometimes no matter how careful we may be, sometimes dogs just have a mind of their own and in one way or another may bolt out a door or someone may accidentally leave the gate open from wherever it is that they go to the potty. It can happen to any pet parent. Now there is, of course, microchipping, high-tech fences, pet cameras, and or tracking technology. If you have more than one however, keeping all of them individually safe with any of these can be quite expensive.
